Dr. Vessel is a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt, Germany. His lab combines behavioral methods with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study what happens in the brain during aesthetic experiences, such as when a person is “moved” by a painting or song. He has been invited to speak on his work to professional and lay audiences at numerous conferences and art museums across the U.S. and Europe, including the Copenhagan Neuroaesthetics Conference, the World Science Festival, the Rubin Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
